Although it will come back a lot colder next week – with growing signals for a harsher winter climate later this month, he added.

Ms. Kent added: "It seems that last week of January will bring a significant drop in temperatures, perhaps becoming locally very cold.

"With the arrival of Atlantic front systems and the impact of this cold air we will have a greater risk of snowfall."

The imminent cold weather will be driven by a warming of the air on the North Pole that drags the most cold in the east – a so-called Sudden Stratospher ic Warming (SSW).

SSW was the driver of the Beast of the East last year that brought the country to a shiver of stillness at the end of the winter.

Miss Kent said, "SSW has happened and gives us a greater chance of colder climates in the UK."

Britain could see the first widespread snow in the winter by next weekend when the mild climate gives way to an explosion.

John Hammond, Weathertrending meteorologist, said: "By the end of the weekend, I predict that snow will fall in places – initially through the northern hills.

" But there is a significant risk of snowfall more extended while the next Atlantic system "collides" with cold air, residing throughout the United Kingdom. "
