Alan Shearer says he hopes there is substance in the last round of acquisition talk – but admits he is not excited about the prospect of ending up at the age of Mike Ashley.
Shearer has been a major critic of Ashley in recent years and his immediate reaction to the news – revealed by the owner himself on Sky News – was that it was the usual round before the January transfer window.
Now he has expanded that theory to bet on the Coral website, telling them he has "heard it all before".
"I can not be quite excited about the potential acquisition in Newcastle, we've been there before and we've heard it all before," he said.
"It seems that these voices always return around the January transfer window and it's a bit like the day of the marmot to be honest.
" That said, it's definitely very necessary so I hope this time end up being more substance behind the rumors.
Shearer is more enthusiastic about the issues on the ground, however, he called United for his fight in beating a point against Everton after the disappointment against West Ham.
"On the field, they put together much better results after a difficult start of the season," he said.
"They rode against West Ham but they came back with a good score at Everton, so overall there were a lot more promises and that was nice to see."
