Airport chaos could trigger an end to the government shutdown

R now, it is difficult to foresee everything that could force a party to move to resolve the partial arrest of the government, but one possibility is the looming threat of the airport chaos.

With too many Transportation Security Agency workers getting sick during a government shutdown demanding they work without pay, the Miami International Airport was forced to close a terminal early for the next three days. This adds to the planned security checkpoint outages at US airports

. For now the problem has been manageable and so far has not allowed the emergence of widespread problems for travelers. But if the partial shutdown continues, the problem could worsen significantly.

At this point, there were not many incentives for both parties to grant a concession in the fight against government shutdown. President Trump has promised his constituents a wall, and is worried about splitting. Republicans are afraid to challenge him and, by extension, the basis of their party. Democrats, meanwhile, have no interest in funding a border wall, especially since their voters demand total resistance to Trump.

At the same time that the parties had relatively few reasons for dealing, the costs of the ongoing closure were relatively small. The previous spending invoices and the automatic nature of the rights programs involved financing 95% of the federal budget, reducing the pressure to make concessions.

There would have been widespread reports of flight delays and huge airport security lines, but they could change. Plane travelers tend to be disproportionately businessmen and Americans of the upper middle class; members of the media or friends or family members of journalists; politically active people and more likely to have links with legislators. It is easy to see how the media could turn tweets on endless lines of security and travel plans interrupted in a national crisis that affects politicians where it hurts.

In other words, at the moment, there is a relatively low cost for not cutting a deal. Chaotic journeys at the airport would change that dynamic and increase the cost of doing nothing. That could be the trigger that causes a kind of end to the shutdown.
